Dark Days

Anyone who spends any time in the northern tier states know that December, January and February are dark. Better get home by 3 because its pitch black by 4! Combine that with winter weather and it feels like all day is spent in a dark dreamland. (Unfortunately that fender-bender you had in the half-light was not a dream):-0

On our mission only 8 short months ago, Costa Rica had 12 hour days and 12 hour nights. It was always dark at 6 pm. Always light at 6 am. There was a wet season and a dry season too. To us, as northerners, that year in Costa Rica had unvarying warm weather. I loved it until I thought of home, the holidays, and snow on a pine-covered mountain.

Home is home. And for me, that is Idaho-Montana and all the glorious weather that comes with it. Lucky for me, I don’t always have to go out in it. I can stay home sipping hot chocolate on bad weather days.

I truly love the change of season – especially the first part of a season. I like winter through New Years. Holidays are perfect for snow! I like Spring through May. I am overjoyed to see the sun again, and I love making a garden! I like summer to mid-July, but after that, all I want to do is soak in the river because it’s too hot!

The Great Designer knew what He was doing when He created this world. He knew that we were a fickle lot. He knew that we needed to experience cold, hot and just right. He knew that we have short memories so we needed to be reminded often – even yearly! And He knew that we had to have a few rainy afternoons to prepare for and appreciate the sunny days.
