Good Books

When I heard that President Russell M Nelson was writing an autobiography of 99 years of living, I went out and bought it. I gave it to my mother for Christmas. She liked it so much that she had my sister give her an audio version of the book for her February birthday!

His powerful and kindly demeanor is felt throughout the whole book and his maturity and wisdom permeate the entire work.

The book is divided into 4 parts, which are: Laws for Fulfilling your Life’s Mission, Laws for Nurturing Enduring Relationships, Laws for Accomplishing the Impossible, and Laws for Walking the Covenant Path.

In part 2, President Nelson talks about families. It is powerful.

When families are strong, societies are strong. When families are weak and riddled with problems, societies ultimately falter and collapse under the weight of social needs too massive for any government to meet. This is not opinion; it is fact borne out not only by one civilization after another but by volumes of research gathered in our day– all of which demonstrates that children from intact families are happier, healthier and more likely to become productive adults. As two seasoned scholars have indicated, “Disease, depression, and early death come to those who reject family life. This result should not cause surprise. Science, after all, is the study of the natural order. And while the Creator forgives, nature never does.”

Carlson, Allan C. and Mero, Paul T., The Family in America, The Howard Center and the Sutherland Institute, 2005, 27-28. As quoted in Heart of the Matter.

Of course, this is just one of the areas he touches on, but it is one that is very important to him and should be for all of us in families and communities.

Recently I attended a 12 week Emotional Self-Reliance class. It was an excellent class with wonderful thought-provoking information and weekly goals to help each of us in the class access the powers of the atonement of Jesus Christ to overcome debilitating emotional excesses in our lives and relationships. It was amazing!

Not everyone is blessed with strong family relationships and good father and mother figures in their lives. People don’t just automatically know how to be a good mother or a good father or even a good disciple of Christ. Sometimes it is a frustrating work of trial and error. However, the Lord has not left us comfortless.

The Lord and His atonement can help you in all aspects of your life. I highly recommend the Emotional Self-Reliance class for everyone in our modern world.
