To Believe

Nephi heard his father preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ and he wanted to know for himself. When the Lord answered his prayers life didn’t suddenly become easier for Nephi. He still had trials and hardship, but these things were easier to bear because he trusted and accepted Heavenly Father’s will for him. Nephi humbly allowed Heavenly Father to guide him, comfort him, protect him, counsel him and ultimately provide a Savior for him. This nurturing relationship was formed through sincere and humble prayer.

But it all started with the choice – the choice to believe in God.

Belief is something we choose—we hope for it, we work for it, and we sacrifice for it. We will not accidentally come to believe in the Savior and His gospel any more than we will accidentally pray or pay tithing. We actively choose to believe, just like we choose to keep other commandments.

Heavenly Father zealously guards our agency. He won’t force any of us to choose follow the Savior and come unto Him. When we pray in faith, we come unto Him of our own volition. Through our actions, we show that we have made a choice to believe, and that simple choice, followed by other faith-filled choices, puts us within reach of our Heavenly Father.

22 And behold, all that He requires of you is to keep His commandments; and He has promised you that if ye would keep His commandments ye should prosper in the land; and He never doth vary from that which He hath said; therefore, if ye do keep His commandments He doth bless you and prosper you.

Mosiah 2:22

Commandments truly are a blessing and a boon to those that believe in God and His son, Jesus Christ. The blessings you receive from keeping commandments are the proof that God is real, you are His child, and Jesus Christ is your Savior.
