His Plan; Our Choices

Nothing is better than going to the Temple to hear Heavenly Father’s great and marvelous Plan of Salvation. The creation of the world, the sun, moon, and stars. The formation of the great seas, mountains, glaciers and rivers. Then, life was created, plant life and animal life. Finally, Adam and Eve were formed. As the “mother of all living”, Eve was the first to step into mortality. Adam also chose to enter mortality and quickly followed Eve.

In this revealing dispensation of the fullness of times, we know Heavenly Father’s plan for His children. We know we are each here to seek after that which is good, to partake of the Gospel of Jesus Christ if possible, and to choose to do good.

Every person who comes to this earth to experience a mortal life is different, their challenges are different, their circumstances are different. Even though no one is the same, and not everyone will have the opportunity to find the Gospel, All OF US have the opportunity to choose good over evil.

To be able to exercise our agency, we need to have opposing options to consider. In doing so, the Book of Mormon also reminds us that we have been “instructed sufficiently” and that “the Spirit of Christ” has been given to every one of us to “know good from evil.”

And yet, not all opposition comes to us from choices that we’ve made. Sometimes opposition is situational, for example: poor health, accidents, and war. “Even though we usually cannot choose between these kinds of situations, we are still free to choose how to react to them. We can do so with a positive or with a pessimistic attitude.”

“We can rest assured that our difficulties, sorrows, afflictions, and pains do not define us; rather, it is how we go about them that will help us grow and draw closer to God.”

A friend of mine, a strong Christian woman in her late sixties, has had rheumatoid arthritis since she was 16. She has undergone more than 30 surgeries for joint replacement, joint fusing, and bone grafts. Through years of painful disfiguring disease and medical treatments, my friend has faced her life situation with an amazing amount of courage and even a sunny, light-hearted disposition. Trapped in a diseased body, she has rejected bitterness and pessimism. She has chosen to be happy.

She is a source of strength to all who know her.
