Lehi, of the Book of Mormon, was a great prophet. Many of his teachings were difficult for his family to understand. Sometimes his teachings sparked arguments among his children.
Nephi, one of Lehi’s sons, didn’t understand the teachings so he went and prayed for more understanding. He was rewarded with his own vision that clarified his father’s teachings. This experience gave Nephi a strong testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
When Nephi returned home from his vision experience, he stumbled into an argument his brothers were having about Lehi’s teachings. Nephi asked his brothers if they had prayed to know. His brothers responded – “we have not; for the Lord maketh no such thing known unto us.”
To my ears, centuries later, this response sounds like a cop out, but Nephi heard something else. He heard an opportunity to remind his brothers of an earlier promise of the Lord –
If ye will not harden your hearts, and ask me in faith, believing that ye shall receive, with diligence in keeping my commandments, surely these things shall be made known unto you.
1 Nephi 15:11
THIS PROMISE also applies to us now. In our confusing, crazy world we can know the Lord’s will for us because there is a prophet of God on the earth today. That man is Russell M Nelson and he is a prophet of God.
When Jesus established His church, he declared to Peter that revelation would be a foundational principle upon which He would build His church.
15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am?
16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
