Peacemakers

I have lived among the latter-day saints my entire life. Sometimes, as in Indonesia and China, those saints have been few in number. In every place, I’ve looked to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for friendship, recreation, and information.

This type of love and friendship is a gift.

I know that there were times in my life that I wasn’t aware of the needs of those around me. I’m sure I missed a few opportunities! However, as I’ve grown in discipleship, I’ve learned that the Lord requires His people to be kind, loving, slow to anger, and deeply concerned for the welfare of others.

Jesus Christ commanded all who would follow Him.

John 13:34 – A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

President Nelson clarified His words-

The Savior’s message is clear: His true disciples build, lift, encourage, persuade, and inspire—no matter how difficult the situation. True disciples of Jesus Christ are peacemakers.

In the United States, as in much of the free world, we prize our freedom of self expression. We boldly declare that we have the right to free speech. What we’ve forgotten is that EVERYONE has that same right.

We are a huge nation with a vast population with many different opinions. There will be disagreements. We need to be able to communicate effectively, respectfully, and clearly with each other.

The words of Jesus Christ are timeless when he gave the “golden rule” in His famous sermon on the mount —

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” (Matt. 7:12). “Treat others how you want to be treated.”

Kindness is karma.
