Ask, Seek, Knock

The Lord was very clear in His teachings. If we really want to know something, we need to search for the best answer, study it out in our minds, and then ask Him in prayer if our conclusions are right. In D&C 9, Jesus explains –

But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right.

It is good to question, to have a curious mind. This is the only way we learn anything. As a child of God it is important to learn about Father in Heaven, His purposes, and His plan. Having questions is a healthy pursuit that will enlarge our understanding and draw us closer to God.

However, while questioning is productive, doubting is not.

Doubt assumes the very worst about ourselves and others. When we doubt, we fear that someone is trying to cheat or deceive us.

We can replace doubts with sincere questions, such as “Is Jesus the Christ?” “Is the Book of Mormon true?” Sincere questions like these can soften our hearts as we show our trust in the Lord and look to Him for answers. (J.R. Jones, Doubt not but be believing, March 2019, Liahona.)

While we are waiting for answers to our sincere prayers, we need to continue faithful in doing those things that we already know are true. Obedience in keeping the commandments brings many blessings, as well as proving our loyalty to God.

John 14:15;21 If ye love me, keep my commandments. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

For the disciple of Christ, The Holy Spirit is essential in recognizing truth. Indeed, He testifies of truth.

Quote by Elder Robert D Hales

The Holy Ghost manifests himself to people in many different ways. Most people describe the feelings of the spirit as “peaceful”, “calming”, or “comforting”. Sometimes a person may hear the still small voice of the Spirit, while other times a person may see something in their mind as an answer to prayer. If the answer you seek is not good or not true, you may experience a stupor of thought that will cause you to forget that thing for a time.

The LORD is good unto them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. (Lamentations 3: 25)
