Ever since our first parents ate the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, the world has been divided into light and dark, left and right, good and evil. All things have two sides, all roads lead off into at least two directions. Indeed, every instance of life requires choice.
As we make good choices, they can turn into good habits that are repeated over and over and are recorded in our bodies. In a conversation I had with a psychiatrist, she said that our brains record the electron paths we most choose to take. Our brains are then informed by our habits and record our daily, recurring desires.

Everything in this world is set up so we must act; we must choose between light and dark. Indeed, this is one of the most important purposes of our lives, to understand and align our wants and desires with Heavenly Father. Jesus Christ is a great example of this and He is the reason we have this wonderful gift and power to choose for ourselves.
26 And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given. (2 Nephi 2: 26)
As there is a law given, the law of obedience, there are consequences for our choices. The Savior said – “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” And how do we know these commandments? The Savior answered, “The Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:15;26.)
To navigate our way through the light and dark in this world it is necessary to have the Holy Ghost and to understand how He speaks to us. It is especially important as we recognize the darkness that is threatening the light we have been given. Satan is real, and he will try us and tempt us, invite us and entice us and see how far he can shake us from our covenants with God.(1)
In a recent address, President Russell M. Nelson lovingly warned all disciples of Christ.
There is no end to the adversary’s deceptions. Please be prepared. Never take counsel from those who do not believe. Seek guidance from voices you can trust—from prophets, seers, and revelators and from the whisperings of the Holy Ghost, who “will show unto you all things what ye should do.” Please do the spiritual work to increase your capacity to receive personal revelation.
