An Informed Mind 2

How does the Holy Ghost speak to me?

After baptism, a person is confirmed and told in that blessing to “receive the Holy Ghost”. This – receiving the Holy Ghost is a choice we make each day as we strive to live worthy of His companionship and then choose to listen to His soft impressions.(2)

Elder David A. Bednar taught: “As we receive this ordinance, each of us accepts a sacred and ongoing responsibility to desire, to seek, to work, and to so live that we indeed ‘receive the Holy Ghost.’”

For the disciple of Christ, receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost and recognizing His influence involve acts of faith like praying, studying the scriptures, and keeping the commandments. Having the Holy Ghost with us is a CHOICE we make everyday.

“This is the grand privilege of every Latter-day Saint … that it is our right to have the manifestations of the Spirit every day of our lives.” — Lorenzo Snow

You can know if a prompting came from the Holy Ghost if the impression is prompting you to do good.

12 And whatsoever thing persuadeth men to do good is of me; for good cometh of none save it be of me. I am the same that leadeth men to all good; — Ether 4:12

The influence of the Holy Ghost is often described as a still, small voice that is more felt than heard. The Holy Ghost can influence us with flashes of inspiration that solve problems that beset us, visions that enlighten our understanding concerning matters, and warm feelings in our hearts that testify of God’s love for us and brings us joy even as we mourn the loss of persons dear to us.

Our Heavenly Father speaks through us by the gift and power of the Holy Ghost in many ways – all of them personal and according to our unique circumstances. As we seek for further light and knowledge in our lives, He will answer our righteous desires.

Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find me; ask, and ye shall receive; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. — D&C 88:63
