This past October I visited the sacred Serpent Mound in Ohio for the first time. It was a beautiful place and the size was amazing! No picture can really describe the way you feel as you walk around such a monument. It is almost mythic in proportions!
Serpents are sacred animals in many cultures. Among the Nephites, the story of the Brazen Serpent foretold the coming of the Son of God.
“And as he lifted up the brazen serpent in the wilderness, even so shall he be lifted up who should come. And as many as should look upon that serpent should live, even so as many as should look upon the son of God with faith, having a contrite spirit, might live, even unto that life which is eternal.”
(Helaman 8:14-15)
Even within Genesis, the serpent tempts Eve with the gift of knowledge. When she accepts, she gets knowledge as well as children. In tempting Eve, the serpent was the catalyst for the whole human experience – for life itself.
Is it any wonder that people, ancient and modern, consider the serpent a sacred symbol?
