Religious Freedom

The United States Constitution with the Bill of Rights are divinely inspired documents. The men who wrote these documents actively prayed for and sought out a higher power and providence for inspiration. “And the Spirit giveth light to every man that cometh into the world; and the Spirit enlighteneth every man through the world, that hearkeneth to the voice of the Spirit.”(D&C 84:46) The founders of the U S Constitution were inspired by God.

The United States Constitution was created for a people who accepted the Ten Commandments as the law of the land. Christian principles were so accepted that even the founding father’s acknowledged their importance, George Washington chief among them, when he instructed the Delawares –.

Five years after the hard fought Revolutionary war ended, the heavily debated Constitution was passed into law and ratified the winter of 1788-1789. The Bill of Rights, which ensures Freedom of Religion, became law in 1791.

The American colonies would not have a Pope or a King. Law would reign supreme. People were free to think and choose for themselves. In theory, people could worship God, or not, without fear of reprisal from government authority.

The United States flag is a symbol of freedom throughout the world.

Not having a state sponsored religion sent many preachers into the backwoods of Colonial America looking for followers. Joseph Smith remembered one preacher who specifically challenged the people to pray and ask God which church they should join.

James 1:5 If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not, and it shall be given him.

In 1820, Joseph Smith accepted that challenge. He went to the woods to pray and ask God which church he should join. He had a remarkable vision that heralded the restitution of all things foretold in Acts 3:16. Jesus Christ proceeded to restore His church, His priesthood and His ordinances.

Joseph was inspired by Jesus Christ to a more perfect understanding of the Kingdom of God on the earth and Daniel’s vision in the Old Testament.
